James P. Gallagher Award in Archaeology Excellence – Dr. Thomas C. Pleger

This year the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center (MVAC) honored a single recipient at its annual award presentation. The James P. Gallagher Award in Archaeology Excellence was presented posthumously to Dr. Thomas C. Pleger, in recognition of his contributions to archaeology throughout a career that was cut far too short by his unexpected death earlier this year. From his undergraduate work and early research at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Tom went on to earn his doctorate in Anthropology at UW–Madison. His 21 years of work in the UW system included nine years as campus executive officer and dean of UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, where a new science building has just been named in his honor. Most recently he served as the president of Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Throughout his career, Tom was known for his genuine interest in students and his tireless dedication to education, including strong advocacy for archaeology and the liberal arts. Dr. James P. Gallagher, founder of MVAC, presented the award to Teresa Pleger, Tom’s wife.
