Eggshell

March 8, 2016

Pieces of EggshellTiny fragments of eggshell are nearly impossible to see while excavating, or to recover by dry-screening through ¼” mesh but can be recovered with flotation. Usually we can’t identify eggshell to species, but these fragments from a late prehistoric Oneota site at La Crosse were identified as giant Canada goose. Even without species information, eggshell is a good indicator of a warm-season occupation and is often found with other warm-season resources such as turtles and fish.
